Our story

The heirs of Bakhshish Sandhu, a well-known Winnipeg retailer of Persian and Asian rugs, JB fine rugs announced today that they are selling their father’s prized collection of over 1200 rugs.

“My father was a self-made man who came from humble beginnings in Punjab. He started his career in Hong Kong and eventually came to Canada where he set up a successful shop first in Winnipeg and subsequently in Vancouver and Toronto,” explains his son George Sandhu. “He had a great eye and an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of rug making. One of his pleasures was his annual buying trips to Asia where he would do the rounds and select only the finest for his Canadian customers.”

“Dad would put aside some of his favourite rugs after each buying expedition,” he continues. “It is these treasures that will now be offered to the general population for the first time.”

Mr. Sandhu’s collection of rugs is from Persia, East Asia and West Asia. Each rug is handmade and unique and will never be duplicated.

They are priceless in that the handmade rug industry has been decimated due to political instability and unrest, which makes them even more precious and rare.
Having succumbed to the travel bug, Bakhshish Sandhu arrived in Hong Kong at the age of — in 1971 without any formal training or financial support from family or friends. After working in several sectors he decided to pursue his passion for art, antiques and rugs. Determined to be his own boss, he opened his own rug shop in 1973 in Hong Kong, which he successfully operated until 2001. He moved to Winnipeg in 1990 where he operated a second store on Academy Road in Winnipeg from 1990 to 1995. His final store was in Vancouver, which he operated from 1995 until his retirement in 2001.

"My father believed in giving back throughout his life was supportive of a number of community causes, and through this event we are fulfilling his wises to help others who suffer from cancer".
